Lyrical strength is one of my musical needs, but when I come across a band that doesn’t necessarily appeal to me in that way yet still hooks me with their sound, that’s something amazing. Secret Colours, from the great city of Chicago, brings an older appreciation of psychedelic sound to our generation. Taking some of the traditionally trippy and unusual sounds (in a good way) to stimulate the senses is a completely different kind of appreciation.
Even their website gives off an eerie, mysterious vibe (although those descriptives don’t even begin to touch the surface of their style). In their bio they ask, “What would west coast pop art experimentalism sound like filtered through an industrial midwest prism? No clue, but perhaps Secret Colours can shine some light on that.” Reading that and after taking an initial listen, I think it’s a pretty accurate description of their sound. Their self-titled album dropped in August 2010, which overall is pretty solid with no dull tracks to speak of. I really enjoyed the songs “S.O.S” and “Chemical Swirl.” (Just the song names alone leave much for the imagination.) Some of their music is almost trance-like, perfect for the mellowest state of mind. Take a listen to the album below.
This young quintet looks like they have a bright future ahead of them. Hit up their website to sample some songs or pick up their album, then take a step back into the past and dive deep into a colorfully but dark lit place of sunken in sofas and dingy garages where music and ideas flow free and the most peaceful state awaits.
